Myofascial decompression cupping therapy (also known as massage cupping) is especially beneficial for clients with muscle areas that are stiff, sore, or in pain as a result of injury or over exertion. Muscle inflammation reduces blood flow causing accumulation of lactic acid and other toxins that need to be released so that the injured tissue can heal. Cupping creates a vacuum between the skin and underlying tissue. The vacuum floods the area with blood rich in nutrients and oxygen and releases connective tissue adhesions that cause stiffness, soreness, and reduced range of motion. If the cupping vacuum becomes too uncomfortable, it is important to tell your therapist so that suction pressure can be lessened.
*Disclaimer: Due to the nature of pulling stagnant blood and lymph fluid to the surface layers of the skin cupping can leave dark reddish to purple markings. The darker the markings, the more stagnant the fluid released. Bringing stagnant fluid to the surface is a necessary step in the healing process. Markings typically last 3 days to two weeks, are generally painless, although there may be tenderness for a couple days following treatment.
